Did you know- using the written word to be our own history keepers is a new chapter in modern history? It's true! We've been only been a (mostly) literate society for about 150 years, & until about 30 years ago, taking the time to write your own perspective was something only done by professional writers or eccentric weirdos. This means that countless stories have been lost to ignorance, fear & disinterest. Why should yours be one of them? No one has ever before, or will ever again, life your unique life. You are special & your story matters.
When I was a teenager, a book appeared on my mother's coffee table called "Just Call Me Mom." It was written & self-published by a woman inspired by talks with my great aunt Notre. She was so fascinated with my aunt's stories that she felt compelled to write them down & publish them. Because of a stranger's wisdom, my family now has a written record of my late aunt's life & incredible faith (& a few recipes!) that we would not have otherwise had. Even if you don't tell your story for you, do it for your descendants. Your stories are medicine for future ills.
How can using a tarot format help?
Because tarot is life! For every experience, scene, conversation, emotion- there is a tarot card for that. Perhaps you've wanted to write your story for awhile but just couldn't figure out where to start, or you got started & then got stuck (same here!). Tarot helps because it provides a structured container that allows you to 1) organize your life events in a manner that is emotionally linear (even if they aren't sequentially in order. 2) Once these emotional landscapes are connected, your words are free to flow forth, because you can "see" how to navigate the reader from "over there" where your story begins, to "over here," where you currently exist. Memoirs invite others to explore our magical interiors to find us, & perhaps find a part of themselves too. Tarot is a map. (One of many)
How long will this memoir be?
Between 40-160 pages.
Why so short?
Because better to be short & done, than long & unrealized. There are 40 tarot cards / life events that we will turn into our memoir. Together, these cards are called the Minor Arcana, & one by one, they depict a full life. Once we understand the meanings & potential meanings of the card, we will 1) identify a moment in our lives that embodies that card, & we will 2) write 1-4 pages about the event. Once we've written about every card, depending on the length of each selection, the memoir will be a minimum of 40 pages & a maximum of 160. Remember, we are using tarot as a map. Maps are meant to get you where you're going, but if you stop everywhere & see everything, you'll never make it.
How will people read it?
As part of your tuition, each writer will be provided with 10 copies of proofread, edited, finished copies of their book. The books are miniature, about the size of a tarot card, so even if they're only 40 full pages, they will feel "bookish," & solid. You are welcome to sell your copies or give them away, & advertise them on your social media sites. If you agree, I would also like to feature your books from a dedicated page on this website. If , after the course, you need more than the original ten copies printed, we can make that happen too.
BEGINS IN JULY
How long will this process take?
This will take a year, twelve months of consistent, light writing, from July 2021 until July 2022. The work breaks down into about 1 tarot card per week (producing 1-4 written pages per card), with every 4th or 5th week off, for workshop & revision.
What qualifies you (Oubria) to do this?
Many of you know me from tarot-land, but few know that tarot is actually my second career. I'm also a professionally trained creative writer & I'm quite knowledgeable in the creation/revision process that enables you to create a work you are proud of. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing from the College of Santa Fe, & a MFA in Creative Writing from Chicago State University. I've also taught college English. I am a capable literary mid-wife, trained & honored to birth your stories.
What if I don't know anything about tarot?
That's ok! Once you register for the course, I will send you an easy-to-understand primer that will provide all the basics you need. Even if you've never looked at a tarot card in your life, you'll come away understanding the system well enough to apply the concepts to your own life & get to writing!
How much does this cost (& what if I can't afford that?)
The course is $1200 for the year, & that includes ten bound copies of your final work, complete with editing & revision. There are a few different payment plans to make it easier, including two separate installments of $600, 12 monthly payments of $100, or 4 quarterly payments of $300. The full payment schedule & options will be sent with the registration info. There will also be a few scholarships available.
How can I fit this into my schedule?
Everyone is busy, & committing to a spiritual practice like writing & the sorting of memories is hard work. There is no way to do it except... to do it. The "perfect" time or the "right" time will never appear, except as an awareness that the time has passed, & it is too late. So a better question is - how can you NOT fit this in your schedule? What are you waiting for?
